Doors Opening in Raytown

In this season, Rock Island has been learning to slow down and listen for what Jesus is already doing.

Instead of trying to force momentum, Alex shared that the invitation has been to pay attention, wait on God, and join Him in the work already unfolding. That posture has shaped the way Rock Island is engaging its neighborhood in Raytown.

What has followed has been simple, but significant.

After moving into a new neighborhood, Rob & Michelle were quickly welcomed by neighbors and invited into a neighborhood gathering. That one connection led to meeting around 40 neighbors and opened the door to meaningful relationships that continue to grow. Along the way, they have encountered people of peace and seen ordinary neighboring become the context for spiritual conversations.

Rock Island has also been learning to discern vision together.

When the group began sharing the dreams God had placed on their hearts, two themes clearly rose to the surface: restored families and new businesses or nonprofits that could bless the city. In the last two years, they have seen both begin to take shape, including restored family relationships and five new ventures launched out of that shared vision.

Some of the most meaningful moments have come through everyday rhythms: walking dogs, picking up trash with neighbors, and having honest conversations about pain, hope, and legacy. In one of those moments, a conversation about violence in the neighborhood opened the door to a deeper conversation about Jesus and eventually to reading Scripture together. In just nine months, they have been amazed by the doors the Holy Spirit has opened.

For Rock Island, this story also starts close to home. Alex reflected that one of the biggest surprises has been realizing how much of their immediate mission field is family. Their hope now is that the transformation they have seen in their own homes would begin to spill outward into surrounding families and neighborhoods across Raytown.

That hope is at the heart of Rock Island’s vision: to see every home come alive through the Good News of Jesus. This story is one more reminder that God works through ordinary presence, patient listening, and faithfulness right where we live.
