God Speaks in Unexpected Ways

Even in our darkest depths, God does not leave us without his comforting assurance. In moments of fear or stillness, creation itself speaks, pointing us back to the God who shelters, sustains, and stays with us. Sometimes God shows up in the most unexpected places when we open our eyes and ears in wonder
and tune in to our surroundings.

Scripture: Romans 1:21

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Romans 1 tells us that God left enough evidence of himself in creation for us to find him there. Sometimes God’s creation brings us comfort in places we least expect to find it. Corrie Ten Boom, survivor of Ravensbrück concentration camp, hid Jewish people in her home during World War 2. Her family was devoted followers of Jesus and knew it was their duty to protect these people who were being hunted down by the Gestapo. Over the course of the war, before they were caught, it is estimated that 800 people passed through their doors on their way to another hiding place or were hidden in the Ten Boom home.

Immediately after her arrest, Corrie was taken to Scheveningen prison, where she was interrogated and put in Solitary Confinement. Her days bled into nights, and at 51 years old, it was both painful and uncomfortable. One day, when a sliver of light shone through her cell, she noticed an ant crawling out of a hole in the wall. She put a few breadcrumbs down to see what would happen, and instantly she knew God brought this little ant to bring her comfort and joy. The ant greedily ate up the breadcrumbs and returned every day around the same time to be fed. When the ant sensed danger, it would run back into the hole in the wall. At that moment, Corrie sensed God saying to her, “You see that ant scurrying into its hiding place for safety? Remember this, Corrie, that I am your hiding place.” Throughout the next years of horror and tragedy, Corrie held on to this truth and hid herself in God when she was afraid.

Our daily situations might not be as extreme as Corrie’s, but God promised there would be signs pointing to him everywhere.

Pray:

Take a few minutes to pray now.

  • Take a minute to name the things around you that are direct creations of God

  • Thank God for what you see, the evidence of his presence through what he created.

  • Ask God to reveal the unseen, unnoticed evidences of his presence in your daily life.

  • If nothing comes to mind, that’s ok! Ask God to keep your eyes and ears open in the days to come.

  • Pray that God would reach the unreached through signs and wonders, whether it be an ant in a prison cell or the fire of a burning bush.
